Avent Anti-colic Nipples (Fast Flow)
The patented Avent Anti-Colic Nipple has an anti-vacuum skirt with a one-way air valve that reduces the incidents of painful gas and colic. The valve opens and closes with baby's natural suckling rhythm, preventing a vacuum from forming inside the bottle so liquid, not air, flows through the nipple. Less air means less discomfort for baby.
The natural shape and feel of the soft, silicone nipple closely resembles the breast, so your baby latches on and suckles just like breastfeeding. This natural shape makes it easier for you to combine breastfeeding and bottle feeding, and continue breastfeeding for as long as you choose.

Does Avent have a nipple for premature babies?
The Variable Flow Nipple has been recommended by medical professionals for premature babies who do not yet have the strength to draw milk from a standard nipple. We recommend that you consult with your child's pediatrician prior to using the Variable Flow Nipple for this purpose. The Variable Flow Nipple tip is pressure sensitive, making it easier for a premature baby to nudge open, so milk drips into the baby's mouth. The position of the nipple in the baby's mouth will change the size of the opening from a small slit to a large hole. Simply turn the bottle while it is in the baby's mouth to adjust the flow to your baby's needs. The nipples are marked with notches to be used as a guide. One notch on top, lined up with the baby's nose is the slow flow. Two notches is a medium flow and three notches is the fast flow.
Can I purchase Avent bottles with differing nipple flow rates?
The slow flow nipple is now available on all 9oz Natural Feeding Bottle and 8oz Via Nursers with the exception of newborn gift sets. When introducing a bottle to baby, you should always begin with the newborn nipple, which has the slowest flow rate.

When do I change flow rates?
A Newborn Nipple should be used if you're currently breastfeeding because the nipple best matches your own natural breastfeeding flow rates. Avent Anti-Colic nipples also come in slow, medium, fast and variable flow rates, while our disposable system offers slow, medium and fast in addition to the newborn flow rate. You'll know it's time to try the next flow rate if your child becomes frustrated at mealtime. Some signs of frustration:
Your baby is suckling hard, pulling away crying, then suckling hard again.
Your baby's feeding time increases.
Remember, a clogged bottle nipple can also prevent the milk from flowing properly.
How long should a nipple be used before it needs to be replaced?
If used on a daily basis, nipples need to be replaced every three months (even if you wash and sterilize the nipples after use). If nipples are used only occasionally, they should be replaced after six months of use.
All Avent Nipples are made from silicone. Since silicone doesn't wear or change shape the way latex rubber does, Avent Nipples will need to be changed less often than other brands. Periodically inspect the nipples for damage, such as scratches or tears. Always replace a damaged nipple.
